HISTORY

The Sierra Nevada High Altitude Training Centre, located at 2,320 metres above sea level, is an ideal place for altitude training in an incomparable setting, which offers outstanding facilities for use by athletes, federations and sporting clubs.

The first phase of the Sierra Nevada High Altitude Training Centre (athletics module, multi-purpose sports hall, medical centre and body building rooms) was officially opened on February 29, 1992 by Mr. Javier Solana Madariaga and the Secretary of State for Sport, Mr. Javier Gómez Navarro.

The architecture of the High Altitude Training Centre posed a real challenge as a large group of facilities had to be adopted and the architects, Estanislao Pérez Pita and Jerónimo Junquera, rose to the challenge with minimal modification of the sloping land and without compromising the mountain architecture.

The second phase of the Sierra Nevada High Altitude Training Centre, which consisted of a sports hall with floating floor, a 50m six-lane indoor pool, a soccer field with artificial turf and a 400m 8-lane athletics track, was officially opened on December 13, 1995 by Mr. Jerónimo Saavedra, Minister of Education and Science, and the Secretary of State for Sport, Mr. Rafael Cortes Elvira.

In addition to its magnificent sports facilities, the Sierra Nevada High Altitude Training Centre also has accommodation for athletes to make their training period a more pleasant, comfortable and welcoming experience. The accommodation was officially opened in 2004 and consists of 89 rooms with Internet connection, most of them double, cafeteria and games room, dining room, three classrooms, a computer room, TV lounge with satellite television and a library.

Highly trained athletes have passed through the Sierra Nevada High Altitude Training Centre, with the final results of each concentration always being satisfactory. For this reason and in many cases, they come back for more training in the Sierra Nevada CAR.
